New research indicates that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying such drugs should be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to original mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense return of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural management.
