During an initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” New York City, promising “a new era” and an bold start to his administration.

A Historic Leader

The young democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

• Free buses
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the richest residents and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Challenges

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
