The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... Currently.
The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that Pluribus would emerge as a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the hit sci-fi show coming to an end—and the next chapter officially in the works—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.
On the Incredible Viewer Reception
Anyone might to get distracted by the constant speculation and fan theories regarding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.
“It feels like force fed your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it from others, and that's intentional. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Despite trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
The Big Question: Has Vince Gilligan See the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Given that Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by public opinion, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… sort of.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Then again, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, why not reference the classics?
“I want Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV+.
