Manchester United Set to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
Schüller, who has six months left on her contract, is known as a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL side.
Her exit from Munich has been anticipated after she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the club's fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top forwards. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Reliable Goalscoring to Boost United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a major boost to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has brought additional business:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure commented: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the American league, added: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
