French authorities to begin stopping migrant vessels in Channel after British demands
France has agreed to start stopping small boats in the English Channel, following months of insistence from the UK.
This policy shift follows the British leader wrote to the President urging him to back the initiative and stating there currently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.
French security forces will be allowed to intercept the small boats at sea, but only before they've collected their passengers, according to authoritative confirmation.
French police have infrequently acted to stop the heavily loaded boats departing from the coastline because it is considered too great a risk to both officers and individuals.
"It is crucial that we implement these tactics this period... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French maritime police representative says personnel will start intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding lives.
Notably, the official ruled out the use of nets to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a possible technique to disable the propellers of the vessels.
This determination to take action at all is a significant step forward, coming after a brief shift towards a stricter strategy this warmer season, which ceased when the previous Interior Minister left office.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, preceding a summit between the UK leader and French president, when authorities were witnessed walking into the sea to slash the hulls of a boat.
Now French officials will again be permitted to intercept boats prior to they pick up asylum-seeking passengers from the beaches of France's north coast, however it's not clear how the vessels will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are currently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the people-smuggling networks will be seeking ways to adjust to avoid detection, as they have done so often in the past.
