Eurovision Was Once a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Become a Strategic Method to Whitewash War.

A freshly coined initialism surfaced a couple of months after the start of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Labeled WCNSF, it means “Child casualty without any family left”. This designation is found only in Gaza, per insights from doctors like child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is unusual for doctors to attend to a young patient who has been bereaved of their complete family. However, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary about the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of children who have lost limbs exceeds that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing normal in scores of doctors arriving back from a sea of ruins with accounts of children being intentionally shot at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Despite a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are not getting in those in need, and major human rights organizations contend that atrocities are still being committed. Officials rejects these allegations, just as it refutes everything it is accused of. But while traumatised orphans are now enduring frigid conditions in improvised encampments, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from pursuing its professed goal of “unity and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to roll out a blood-red carpet for Israel, even though several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. And this, we are told, is what global togetherness looks like.

The contest, notably prohibited Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “grave situation in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza seems entirely distinct.

A Double Standard

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was alleged to have used questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an effort to politicise Eurovision. Set aside the news that a toddler was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Pay no mind to the evidence that settler violence and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that global media are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. None of this, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Profound Human Cost

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – almost double the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it once represented. An institution that initially championed peace has transformed into a transparent instrument to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
