Arrangements for Putin-Trump Meeting Postponed Shortly After Hungarian Capital Negotiations Proposed

Currently exist "no preparations" for US President Donald Trump to meet Russian President Putin "in the immediate future", a White House official has announced.

Recently the US president stated he and the Russian president would conduct negotiations in Hungary's capital soon to address the Ukraine conflict.

A planning session between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the administration clarified the two had had a "positive" call and that a meeting was no longer "required".

The administration declined to provide any more details on why the talks had been postponed.

Previous Developments

The US president had discussed a Hungarian meeting over the phone with Putin, a just prior to hosting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Various sources suggested his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "heated exchange", with sources claiming Trump had pushed him to give up significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a agreement with Moscow.

However, on Monday the American president embraced a peace initiative supported by Kyiv and European leaders to pause the war on the current front line.

"Let it be cut the way it is," he remarked.

Russia has consistently objected against halting the existing front lines.

The Russian government was solely focused on "enduring stability", Lavrov commented on this week, indicating that freezing the front line would simply constitute a short-term truce.

Negotiating Stances

The "root causes" of the conflict needed to be addressed, Lavrov emphasized, using Russian diplomatic language for a series of maximalist demands that include the acknowledgment of full Russian sovereignty over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a non-starter for Ukraine and its EU supporters.

Zelensky stated discussions about the battle positions were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Russia was "employing all tactics" to avoid diplomacy.

He further commented the exclusive issue that could make Moscow "become engaged" was that of the provision of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.

Weapons Discussions

The Russian president's unplanned conversation with the US leader recently came ahead of rumors that the United States was planning to provide long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike Russian territory.

Zelensky said it was the Tomahawks issue that had compelled Moscow to participate in talks. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had emerged as a "valuable contribution" in international relations", he commented.
